The Ballston neighborhood in Arlington, Virginia is gaining popularity and 4300 Wilson, a newly transformed Class A office building, is the gateway to this rejuvenated and burgeoning urban center. The Gensler design team renovated the lobby, incorporating hospitality-inspired design elements, and added a conference room, a fitness center, and other amenities to create a distinctive work environment that appeals to both visitors and tenants.
To make 4300 Wilson stand out, the team created an enhanced entryway that extends above the street level. A semi-organic, sculptural feature overhead welcomes visitors into the space and leads them inside, where it touches down as a bench in the reception area. This element breaks up the previously open corridor and gives the lobby a sense of place, connecting visitors to the elevator and amenities.
The implementation of an indirect light source that could continuously recalibrate to the morphology of such intricate sculpture was the main point of reference for the lighting design. Our product Compose at 11W/ft using a combination of curve profiles, and adjustable brackets seamlessly merged into the sculptural form factor while generating a lightbox radiant effect when looking from the outside of the building. All highlighted by its ultra high CRI (98+, Sole technology) to ensure both finishes, textures, and hues were rendered without shifts, or value decay.
The general use areas boast an open floor typology naturally enhanced by a juxtaposed geometrical cove that counters the organic flow of the lobby. Given the overall design, the lighting on the cove needed to be powerful enough to serve as the tenet for the lighting of the space, but soft enough to provide visual comfort. For this configuration, Compose Gypsum Knife edge was used in order to maintain a discreet profile for the cove, and occlude the light source to maintain the sense of wonder regarding the light source.
